FIR TREE ISLAND

0n9

I've been toying with the idea of building an 0n9 layout and have, over the years, bought or scratchbuilt suitable items ready for it. I wanted a continuous loop layout, but not a rabbit warren style, so when an old baseboard became available, it gave me the inspiration to start.

Basically two connected ovals, with one point visible, it has the fiddle yard hidden behind the background hills. The train emerges from a tunnel, crosses the bridge and stops at Fir Tree Falls station. This is where passengers can disembark to visit the famous falls. The train then continues, either forking left along the embankment into another tunnel or continues straight on into a long tunnel, which loops back into the fiddle yard.

The frame of the old baseboard was used after removing the old chipboard. It was constructed of the usual 2"x1" and was recovered with MDF. The track base was fretted out using a jigsaw and supports, also of 2"x1", were incorporated. The trackbed was mounted about 100mm above the base and polystyrene tiles will be used to create the support for the scenics.
